Olón sits on the southern coast of Ecuador about an hour north of Salinas and about 2 1/2 from Guayaquil. The diversity of the area is one of the attractions. One minute you can be surfing or hanging out at the beach and another minute be hiking in the coastal mountains to look for Howler monkeys,Toucan’s and Waterfalls . It’s just like a mini Amazon with all kinds of flora and fauna: it’s a Birdwatchers Paradise.

This area of the coast is also the winter breeding grounds for the humpback whales here in South America. During the months of July through September you can see the whales swimming by the coast literally from anywhere. About an hour north you can also take day long tours to see the whales in Puerto Lopez. You can also hire a boat for a day long tour to the nearby island or to go sports fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling.
